Hand-Painted 1/6 Scale Horror Statues: A Collector's Guide

Horror collectors want statues that look good on a shelf and still feel a little unsettling up close. A good horror statue is big enough to show detail, painted with care, and built around a character with a clear mood. Here are some of the hand-painted horror figures we make in our Athens studio, and what to look for when you choose one.

What makes a good horror statue?

  • Scale. 1/6 scale (about 25–30 cm tall) is the classic collector size. It is large enough for facial expressions, torn fabric and skin texture to read clearly, but still fits on a normal shelf.
  • Painting. Horror relies on subtle colour: pale skin, bruising, dried blood, grime and rust. Hand painting with layered washes and highlights gives depth that factory-painted figures rarely have.
  • Base and storytelling. A sculpted base (a well, gravestones, rubble) turns a figure into a scene.
  • Material. High-detail resin holds very fine sculpted detail and takes paint well.

How to display horror statues

Low, warm side lighting brings out sculpted texture and makes faces look more dramatic. A dark background (black card or a dark shelf) makes pale skin and highlights stand out. Keep statues out of direct sunlight, which can fade paint over time.
